This free sewing pattern is for a stylized “Top Hat II” design, created specifically for cosplay costumes and stage accessories. Unlike a traditional silk hat, this version has a flared crown shape that widens toward the top, giving it a more dramatic and comic-style appearance.
The construction method is simplified compared to authentic millinery techniques, making it more accessible for costume making rather than formal wear. This allows you to complete the hat more quickly while still achieving a striking silhouette.
The base design is easy to customize—adjust the crown height, reshape the brim, or add decorative elements such as ribbons, feathers, or lace to suit your character or theme.
Seam allowances are already included, so you can cut and sew directly without modifications. After printing, align and tape the pages along the matching lines before cutting.
Perfect for cosplay, theater props, themed events, and creative fashion projects, this top hat pattern is beginner-friendly while still offering room for advanced customization.
* If adding a lining, cut two pieces each for the top and side, and sew them slightly smaller.
(1) Apply fusible interfacing to the top, side, and brim.
(2) Fold the top edge of the side decoration inward by 1 cm with an iron and sew it to the side.
(3) Sew the side pieces together and topstitch the seam. (Trim off any extra seam allowance.)
(4) Sew the top and side together, then trim the seam allowance leaving about 2 mm.
(5) Sew the two brim pieces together.
(6) Insert wire into the bias position of the brim and cover it with bias tape.
* It is better to tack the wire to the seam allowance to keep it neatly in place.
(7) Sew the brim and side together.
