This is a free sewing pattern and step-by-step tutorial for making slightly straight-leg overalls (also known as dungarees). Designed with beginners in mind, this pattern includes seam allowances (S/A) so it can be used right after printing and cutting along the joining lines.
For ease of sewing, the front chest pocket has been omitted and the zipper is a decorative dummy. You can personalize the design by adding decorative topstitching, adjusting strap styles, or using different closures. The back panel can be modified to use only straps for a lighter look. Rolling up the hems gives a casual feel, and shortening the legs to create an overall shorts style is also cute.
We recommend denim fabric for the most authentic look, but be aware that thick denim requires a strong sewing machine. For home sewing machines, medium-weight denim or cotton twill is easier to work with. The straps in this pattern use button closures; if you use hardware buckles, adjust the strap length accordingly. For a polished finish, use contrasting topstitch thread to highlight seam lines.
Although simplified for easier construction, this is still a relatively advanced pattern for beginners. It is recommended to have a pair of overalls or jeans on hand as a visual reference while sewing.
